Scenario and Game Rules

Uniform Requirements

Silent Sunset is a themed event, thus it has stricter uniform and equipment requirements than your average airsoft event. Having such rules helps set the mood and mentality of the game. Most items required for Silent Sunset are readily available in military surplus stores, sporting goods stores and online and for low cost.

During the post-game raffle, a prize will be given to one player either side for the best impression kit that is the most accurate and period-correct. Judging will be based on both voting by the players as well as game staff.

    Foot Wear

Black or jungle boots are recommended for US Army. Jungle or PAVN boots are recommended for PAVN/Viet Cong. Sandals are NOT allowed but may be worn in photo opportunities only.

Eye protection must provide both frontal and side impact protection. BCG glasses are NOT allowed as eye protection.

    Water

All players must have at least one canteen or water-bearing device of water on-person during the game. Drinking water will be provided for both sides and located at the firebase for US Army players and base camp for PAVN/VC players. It will be hot in August in VA, be sure to hydrate your body at least 2 weeks prior MINIMUM.

    Safety Rules

Silent Sunset is an event that runs for ten hours concurrent. Patience, care and maturity are important to maintain a quality level of play. It will be hot, it will be humid, and you will be tired. You can do many things to prevent accidents and incidents from occurring: hydrate yourself two weeks prior and stay hydrated throughout the day; be sure of your footing and take careful steps moving through foliage; and as always, play with HONOR.

    Chronograph Rules

  • 420 FPS with .20 g BBs for AEGs and SAWs.
  • 500 FPS with .20 g BBs for sniper platforms with minimum 100 foot engagement rules.
  • ALL GUNS USED IN THE GAME MUST BE CHRONOGRAPHED.

  • Any gun found on-field without a chronograph inspection zip tie, the player will immediately be removed from the game and the premises.

    Required Equipment

  • Eye protection
  • Sturdy boots with ankle support
  • Red "dead" flag
  • Water
  • Flashlight (See uniform rules)

    Game Conditions

    Magazine and Ammo Limits

Each player must only carry "combat loads" of ammunition on their person. The limit is 600-800 rounds in any combination of different types of magazines. For example, you can carry one 600 round high capacity winding magazine and 2 30 round non-winding magazines.

Loose BB ammo in bags and speed loaders cannot be carried on your person. Such supplies must be left behind at the ammo dump for US Army players or either the base camp or ammo caches for PAVN/VC players. It is only at these points that players can resupply their combat loads.

    Hits, Respawn and Medics

All hits on body, gun and equipment count. Once hit, pull out your red "dead" flag and place on your head. Lay down for five minutes. If, after five minutes, a player has not be healed by a medic, the player must return to the respawn point(s).

Each side has limited amount of medics. US Army is allowed one medic for every six players. PAVN/VC is allowed one medic for every ten players. Medics must be determined and declared before the beginning of the event and must remain a medic for the duration of the event. The medic role cannot be switched to another player.

Each medic has four bandages represented by a length of rope with a knot tied in it. To use the bandage, the medic must reach a wounded player before the player's five minutes of dead time is reached. Wounded players can be pulled back into a safer zone first. To use the bandage, the medic must untie the knot and then tied the bandage around the wounded player's arm. The wounded player is now healed and back in the game. If the wounded player is hit again when wearing a bandage, the player is automatically dead and must return back to the spawn point. A bandage cannot be reused. Once a medic runs out of bandages, the medic can resupply with four new bandages back at the firebase for US Army players or base camp or ammo cache for PAVN/VC players.

US Army players can only respawn at the field hospital located at the firebase. Once a dead US Army player arrives at the field hospital, he can only enter back into the game when there are three other dead US Army player there as well. It takes FOUR dead players to re-enter the game.

PAVN/VC players can respawn at either the base camp or two mobile respawn points. The PAVN/VC forces have two mobile respawn points represented by two trap doors. To use the mobile respawn point, PAVN/VC players must place the trap door wherever they want to set the spawn point. Once place, the respawn point cannot be reused. Dead PAVN/VC can respawn immediately at these trap doors but should be careful to not lead US Army players back to the locations. Mobile spawn points can be destroyed by US Army forces and once destroyed, cannot be reused.

    Chain of Command

Silent Sunset depends on a chain of command within each side to hand out missions and sub-missions. The US Army has a more regimented chain of command while the PAVN/VC side has a higher level of command working with guerilla cells.

The US Army has the following chain of command:

  • Field Commander - receives orders from game command and works on overall strategic planning to achieve game objectives.
  • LRRP Ranger Commander - receives orders from Field Commander and executes mission orders with LRRP team.
  • US Army Commander - receives orders from Field commander and executes mission orders with US Army infantry.
  • US Army Squad Leader - one SL for every six players, works with US Army commander on tactical execution of mission orders.
  • US Army Infantry - follows orders from Squad Leader.
  • LRRP Ranger - follwos orders from LRRP Ranger Commander.
  • The PAVN/VC has the following chain of command:

  • Field Commander - receives orders from game command and works on overall strategic planning to achieve game objectives.
  • PAVN Commander - receives orders from Field Commander and executes mission orders with PAVN and/or VC elements.
  • PAVN Squad Leader - one SL for every four players, works with PAVN Commander on tactical execution of mission orders.
  • PAVN Infantry - follows orders from Squad Leader.
  • Viet Cong - works independant but may take orders from PAVN Commander.
  • Radios

Radio communications is a limited resource. While the US Army has the technological advantage, PAVN forces still enjoy radio equipment supplied by China and the Soviet Union. The following roles are allowed radio usage:

    US Army

  • Field Commander - uses radio to communicate with game command and both LRRP Ranger and US Army commanders.
  • Both LRRP Ranger and US Army commanders - uses radio to communicate with Field Commander and Squad Leaders (US Army only)
  • Squad Leaders - uses radio to communicate with US Army Commander, can either carry radio himself or designate one of his US Army Infantry players as a Radio Transmit Operator (RTO).

    PAVN/VC

  • Field Commander - uses radio to communicate with game command and PAVN Commander.
  • PAVN Commander - uses radio to communicate with Field Commander.
  • Dusk/Night Conditions

Silent Sunset will end at exactly 10:00pm sharp. Loud air horn blows will be the signal for the end of the game.

Once the game has been called, remove your issued green glow stick, break and shake it to activate, and secure to your person somehow. Best method would be in the back of your goggle strap. Also feel free to use your flashlight to guide your way.

Exit the field making your way south by southwest by way of compass. Look for orange glow sticks hanging from trees which will mark a path exiting out of the AO. Boundries are marked with two tone colored paint on trees. Red paint on one side designates the game-in side of the tree, white paint on the other side designates the out-of-bounds side of the tree.

Use your judgement, flashlights and radio comms if needed.

    Rules of Engagement

The US doctrine in South Vietnam was to win the "hearts and minds" of the local populace, to dissuade them from supporting the guerilla freedom fighters and PAVN elements that would operate in the area. There may be civilians in the area of operations. Strict rules of engagement for US Army elements will be given to players at-event by the chain of command. Unauthorized killings of civilians will bring about repercussions against players so watch those itchy trigger fingers, troop!
